Tire Pressure is Controlled and Set by Tire Temperature. Period. Any good chassis engineer will tell you that. If last year's tire budget was $1800 but you didn't get the full contact patch from your race alignment, then that hard earned money was not well spent.

Tire Pressure is Controlled and Set by Tire Temperature. Period. Any good chassis engineer will tell you that. If last year's tire budget was $1800 but you didn't get the full contact patch from your race alignment, then that hard earned money was not well spent.

A good pyrometer will make sure you get the correct contact patch from the inside of your tire to the outside of your tire. How do you control the temperature across a tire? By adjusting tire pressure. A tire that is over inflated will ride only in the center and an under inflated tire will cup in the center. We run a certain amount of camber in a car to assist in laying the tire flat in a loaded corner, but the final contact is dictated by the pressure of the tire making the tire contact shape.

DiscoveryParts offers a great selection of tire pyrometers to help you not only corner faster but save some of that tire budget.

  • Probe Pyrometers

The benefit of a probe tire pyrometer is that it measures tread temperatures at the cord. All tires will develop their optimum grip when the rubber compound is heated to their optimum grip. Race tire manufacturers provide optimum tread temperature info for a given compound. Use a probe type pyrometer to get the cord temperature and decrease lap times as you increase tire life. A double win in the racing world.

  • IR Pyrometers

Infrared pyrometers, also know as IR Laser Sighted Pyrometers, are versatile and can be used to check just about any kind of surface temperatures. You can find sources of heat which will affect the driver, locate dead engine cylinders, check track temperatures, brakes - just about anything. For surface measurements, the infrared is a stand out.
